I sort of agree? I know that if I were the LW’s coworker, I’d be worried about messing up because I know I’m prone to that sort of thing unintentionally. If it came up, I would probably say something like “I’m going to make a conscious effort to respect you and use the correct language, but I might mess up. If I do, it’s an accident and you’re welcome to address it with me.” I think that’s the best way to go about it? Responsibility shouldn’t lie solely with the affected person to educate everyone, of course, but if I get your pronouns wrong, please correct me so I don’t do it again.
