A Pizza vs. Money Question of the Day
Nicole Dieker

It worries me that people think of compliments as an incentive. I know that my bosses are showing appreciation for my work by paying me, but that doesn’t mean that they should only reserve kindness for the times I go way above and beyond my expected or usual productivity. To me, that’s like people thinking they don’t need to say “please” or “thank you” for service industry workers or people performing a common courtesy. Comparing a compliment or a kind word to a cash bonus speaks volumes about how infrequently some employers are willing to offer either one.
