Though the last film of the original Lord of the Rings trilogy came out nearly twenty years ago, the franchise still remains a major cultural touchstone. A quick dive into Google search trends further reveals that there are certain parts of the country where it is especially true that the popularity of these films “shall not pass.”

With the stunning New Zealand filming locations and incredible nature shots, it should come as no surprise that the more traditionally outdoorsy regions out west seem be the most engaged with the films. After all, the first movie is essentially just one long backpacking trip.

Three of the top five cities for Lord of the Rings are also in the top five for the search term “hiking”, with the exceptions being the two fandom strongholds of San Antonio and Austin.
