I think this phrase hits the nail on the head! I love the techniques you suggested and I’ve used three of them to varying degrees of success depending on the project; sometimes an idea that works well on one project yields nothing on the next.
One of the biggest deceptions I see in young writers is that they think because prose is neat and tight when it is finished it must have been created that way from the beginning.
But like you said, creativity is messy. With the right perspective, the messiness and the discovery of the creative process becomes as much fun as seeing the final product.
