Let’s talk about anti-design.

To me, much of the recent ‘anti-design’ seems inspired by the work of David Carson and others. The style of minimalistic typography album covers that we’ve seen recently is also a mirror of much of the cover art from the 70-80’s alt-rock/pop/post/whatever scene.

I do second the notion that they represent a ‘I don’t give a fuck’, what I feel is different this time around though is that the symbolism seems a bit more empty and hollow compared to previous anti-design movements, as the style is appropriated by successful mainstream artist, and doesn’t originate from a sub/alt-movement/zine culture source.

Taking that into account, I personally interpret much of the recent anti-design as pure aesthetics with no emotion which leads me to personally feel ‘so what?’ whenever I see the artwork
