They’re finally here .. Facebook Automated Rules
No more wasted time in manual campaign maintenance
I was opening my Facebook Ads manager to check a running campaign and I was surprised to see a new button on the right side of my Ads manager saying “Create Rule”
WoW .. Is this what I really think it to be ?
I clicked “Create Rule” and yes .. IT IS THE CAMPAIGN AUTOMATED RULES (dance)
So for those who are missing why I’m excited, here’s the short story .
Last year Facebook made the automation of the maintenance of the Ad campaigns available through its API which means that people who are using 3rd party tools to manage their Facebook Ads can set from these tools some rules to automate the maintenance of their campaigns/Ads so they can increase/decrease budgets or even stop campaigns/Ads when they match a certain condition .
The good news is that automation is available now for everyone through the Ads manager or Power Editor .
How can Automated rules be useful ?
If you are running a bunch of Facebook Advertising Campaigns , you will probably spend a lot of your time monitoring the outcome of the campaigns and trying to optimize the ones that are not performing well , maybe disabling some Ads or Ad sets or increasing the daily budget for a well performing campaign .
All this manual work is according to a specific flow in your mind with some calculations and triggers that makes you evaluate your decisions when doing the changes to your campaigns .
And here comes the awesomeness of Automated Rules , where you’ll put the logic in your mind to some rules that control the behavior of the campaigns automatically , and guess what you’ll be notified too when any rule is met.
What can you do with Automated Rules ?
You can create rules in Ads Manager and Power Editor that automatically update or notify you of changes to your campaigns, Ad sets or Ads.
For example, you can create rules that:
- Turn off an ad when the ad isn’t performing as well as expected.
- Increase the budget of your overall campaign when more people click on your ad.
- Send a notification when the overall number of people viewing your ad decreases past a certain number.
- And the possibilities goes on …
What are the variables of the rule ?
When you click this nice “Create Rule” Button , you’ll get a simple yet full-of-options pop up
Note that , you can also do the same for multiple campaigns by selecting the campaigns and clicking on the Create Rule button that will show up
And here you have the following options to create your rule :
1- Apply Rule To
Choose if your rule will apply for a specific campaign,Ad or Ad set or if it’ll apply globally on all active campaigns,Ads or Ad sets .
You can choose to turn off the campaign , only send a notification , Adjust the budget (increase/decrease the daily or lifetime budget) or if you are using manual bid you can increase or decrease it.
This is the condition of the rule that when met the action will be done.
You select a condition and then you have greater than , smaller than , is between and is not between to choose from .
Current available conditions are:
- Daily Spent
- Lifetime Spent
- Cost Per Result
- Cost per mobile App install
- Hours since Creation
- CTR (For links)
- Lifetime impressions
In addition to some conditions that are used when you have Facebook Pixel installed on your website for tracking various user behaviors
Here you select the number of days worth of data that will be included in the evaluation of the rule condition
This is how often the rule will be evaluated , currently it seems there is no other option than “ Continuously”
To adjust the notification settings for this rule , by default notification on Facebook is selected but you can also choose to receive notifications by email.
Those are the people who’ll be notified regarding this rule , only who have access to the Ad account can be included as a subscriber for the rule .
The final step is to give your rule a recognizable descriptive name for easy identification .
