Episode One

The Game Publisher Battlefront: Publisher Greed vs Community Perception

In Episode One of The Esportspedia Townhall, we examine the recent debacle of EA’s Star Wars Battlefront 2.

For those of you that may be unfamiliar with the situation, take a look at this article. Long story short, EA incorporated micro-transactions to unlock key characters in the game (I.E. Darth Vader). It is possible to unlock these characters through gameplay via card drops, but it has been estimated that this would take approximately 4,528 hours (over six months).

In this episode we cover a few questions that the Esportspedia community members had in reaction to the Star Wars Battlefront II situation: Are “pay-to-win” micro-transactions a poor business practice in a paid game? How do you respond to community backlash on this scale? At what point do you compromise with the community?
