How Walgreens Keeps a #HealthyBiz

By Meghan Karavidas, Esri

Walgreens, headquartered in Deerfield, Illinois, is the largest drugstore chain in the United States. Stores are located within five miles of 75 percent of the US population, offering prescriptions, grocery and gift items, photo printing services and beauty products.

Walgreens built spatial analytics capabilities into their business processes using ArcGIS for Server. An Enterprise Location Intelligence team within the corporate strategy organization was put together to help with GIS-related projects in partnership with other business divisions throughout the company.

GIS has helped the company adapt successfully to changing market conditions and be primed to grow. The team helps to fine-tune store location and product mixes by understanding individual market needs. The result has been the first global pharmacy-led, health and well-being organization with a combined business operating in more than 25 countries and increased sales by 35%.
