Day42- Positive Framing

Learning the Dimensions of Human Flourishing

Sept. 15th, 2016

The morning started slow, but picked up some speed in the afternoon. Today I interviewed Dwayne, a Watson scholar who is worked on a venture that promotes and communicates the importance of global citizenship. Really interesting to learn more about his story along with the importance of having a mindset of global citizenship. We are one race, the human race.

For the afternoon, had class, Transformative Team. We reviewed the dimensions of human flourishing (positive emotions, engagement, relationships, meaning, and accomplishment) as well as the importance of appreciative inquiry (focusing on the positive rather than the negative).

For a portion of the class, we spent time taking a 240-question survey called the “VIA Survey of Character Strength.” Through the survey, we learned what some of our strengths may be. My top 5 strengths were as follows

Strength #1- Creativity, ingenuity, and originality

Thinking of new ways to do things is a crucial part of who you are. You are never content with doing something the conventional way if a better way is possible.

Strength #2- Curiosity and interest in the world

You are curious about everything. You are always asking questions, and you find all subjects and topics fascinating. You like exploration and discovery.

Strength #3- Industry, diligence, and perseverance

You work hard to finish what you start. No matter the project, you “get it out the door” in timely fashion. You do not get distracted when you work, and you take satisfaction in completing tasks.

Strength #4- Zest, enthusiasm, and energy

Regardless of what you do, you approach it with excitement and energy. You never do anything halfway or halfheartedly. For you, life is an adventure.

Strength #5- Perspective wisdom

Although you may not think of yourself as wise, your friends hold this view of you. They value your perspective on matters and turn to you for advice. You have a way of looking at the world that makes sense to others and to yourself.

What fun results, I think this is accurate, but it’s not surprising considering I was the one taking the survey! If my self-awareness is good enough, then these results are at least somewhat accurate. I’m really glad we did this survey because I find this information helpful. I can use this information to focus more on my strengths. There’s lots of other tools and literature on finding your strength, may look into that tomorrow.

Grocery shopping, emails, and soon bed.
