Born on June 7, 1958 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Prince Rogers Nelson was the son of musicians John Nelson and Mattie Shaw. Prince loved music from a very young age and learned to play several instruments including the piano and the guitar.

In high school, Prince joined a band known as Grand Central together with Andre Anderson and Morris Day. It was a mildly successful band with a number of live shows. It diminished with time. Prince signed with Warner Brothers Records, and in 1978, he released his first album, For You. Ranking 163 on the US Pop Charts, the album was not a strong success. Prince released Prince in 1979 followed by the widely reviewed albums Dirty Mind in 1980 and Controversy in 1981.

Prince found global success in 1982 with his album 1999, which included several top-10 hits like “Delirious” and “Little Red Corvette.” In 1984, Prince released Purple Rain, which featured no. 1 Billboard Hot 100 singles like “Let’s Go Crazy” and even inspired a film titled Purple Rain.
