Record Turnout for Cupa Iliescu

New players continue to flow to the Cupa Iliescu, which is becoming one of the larger tournaments on the European circuit. The tournament takes place in Drobeta-Turnu Severin, a Romanian city on the banks of the Danube. It has been running since the time of Apolodor. The January edition of the monthly tournament drew 101 players, over 95% of which were playing in their first tournament. The winner, by a 2 point margin, was Gheorghe Gogoaşă-Umflată (1-kyu). Smartin Miassny, EGF President, spoke about the event in glowing terms. “We need more tournaments like this. Drobeta is the only city I visited in Romania. I liked it very much when I stayed there for some days in 1991 with a big IBM convention.” Fratele Sora, the Romanian President, was strangely reticent in his comments, saying only “Yes, Drobeta. They don’t know how to play ping-pong there.
