The Middle East offers exceptional foods for the adventurous eater. Atop the list is the ubiquitous hummus, which has spread to the United States with a vengeance. Hummus is comprised of mashed chickpeas flavored with tahini, olive oil, garlic, and lemon juice and is often served with pita bread, though some will spread it on burgers and baked potatoes. Another popular dip is baba ghanoush, which offers a similar consistency with mashed eggplants but offers a kick with added chili. Falafel is another recognizable dish, which is fried balls made of chickpeas, onions, and spices, usually inside of a pita with veggies.
