I always tip 20%, often more, having worked in the industry while in college. Some of the responses from people in the US are absolutely clueless. What the restaurant industry has done is make the idea of a living wage the responsibility of the restaurant patron. In many states servers are not paid minimum wage, because of tips. In many Southern states (big surprise!) servers can be paid as low as $2.30/hour. Every time a city council or state legislature attempts to do something about this system the restaurant lobbyists show up with “campaign contributions.” In many restaurants the servers are tipping out the bartenders, the busboys and the kitchen. This is a disgraceful system, but to be expected in the only industrialized country in the West without a national health insurance program. If you can’t afford to tip, stay the fuck home.
