Start-ups are where you want to be!

Your parents lived a different kind of life to you. Gone are the days when your life path had to follow the same route as everyone else’s: finish school, go to college, graduate, get a job (not a career), stick it out, climb the ranks, never leave, die. Sure, it was a stable, predictable path, and who doesn’t like stability, right? Easy answer — anyone that wants personal growth, change, challenge, fun, malleability and to change the world!

And nowhere, in this crazy fast-moving world are you likely to experience this more than in a tech start-up.

If you’re still leaning towards the staid, smothering corporate side, there might be no hope for you. For the rest (read: vast majority) of you, we’ll break the differences down:

1. Lose the suit:

We don’t dress to impress, we do casual and comfortable. What’s the benefit? Have you ever seen a sumo wrestler wearing a waistcoat and tie (even though we’d actually prefer it)? Thought not! We allow our employees to dress how they feel comfortable. And if, for you, comfortable is a suit — then that’s awesome too.

2. Lock the filing cabinet and throw away the key:

Stop chopping down forests… Have you never heard of cloud computing in your cave? No matter what we do, we can do it from literally anywhere and access (or share) any piece of information at the click of your mouse. No printing. No filing. No ledgers.

The beauty of our working environment is that through a multitude of communication channels (and the cloud), you are connected to your team. Here at Eventerprise we make use of Basecamp and WhatsApp to keep everyone in the loop of what’s happening — in real time! And the best part is that you can do this in a coffee shop in a completely different continent. Just ask our teams in Cape Town, Switzerland, Philippians, India and USA. Everyone knows what’s happening within the company 24/7.

3. Kick the claustrophobia:

Think only your therapist can help you with that? If you step in to any tech start-up office you’ll automatically begin to kick Dr How-Does-That-Make-You-Feel in the no-no zone. Open plan, baby! It’s collaborative, agile, bright and breezy and you are guaranteed at least 3 belly-laughs a day! The only downside is that you’ll need to find somewhere else to put up your cat posters.

4. Boxed in, or thinking out the box?

In a traditional environment you will be allocated your tasks and deadlines and literally have to grind until your jobs are signed off — without ever seeing the bigger picture. In our space, you set your tasks, you collaborate with a team, you truly get to put your ideas into practice, you break things and then work double time to fix them and make them better than when you started. Freedom to explore new concepts, platforms, software and ideas is a daily necessity. Who doesn’t love being part of something new and exciting?

Disclaimer…

I totally understand that this way of working is not for everyone — the thoughts expressed in this article are my own and are not intended to make your job feel boring, dead-ended or old school. But if the proverbial shoe fits, you know what to do. If you got a tingly feeling reading this and have itchy feet, pop on over to our careers page and you never know, maybe there’s something special waiting there for you — like, the rest of your (happy) life.
