Thanks for this article, Andrew. These points definitely resonate with my experience in the social enterprise and NGO scene over the last five years. However, I think one important element is missing that we should be addressing head on — pay. A big dilemma in “fulfilling careers” in development is that the innovative social enterprises and fellowship programs that you mentioned simply don’t pay enough to retain motivated employees. The mission driven aspects can definitely attract, but, a very real struggle is retention and growth through adequate salaries. I’d welcome your thoughts on this market mismatch.
