It was just your standard June morning for Patsy Willis last Tuesday. She sat in the formal living room of her simple home instead of the more often utilized basic living room because, well, she was just feeling super.

But something was off.

By God, she’d forgotten all about her promise to meet Tiffany at Starbucks. She leaped up from her armchair and yelled a quick goodbye to her two boys before heading out the door, but that is where it all went downhill. Her parting words, as recalled by the children, were “Bret, Michael, I’m leaving. I’m heading to The Collection for a little gal time.”

Now, Patsy has dealt with plenty of adversity in her life. She had been forced to drive her children to swim practice on Thursdays and cancel her morning ‘me time,’ as well as having no choice but to mow the lawn once in her late 20's.

But nothing could have prepared her for the force with which her children ripped her a new one on that unforgiving Tuesday morning.

“She just didn’t understand!” recollected Bret as he comforted his younger brother. “No one calls it The Collection. It was The Avenues and it always will be The Avenues.”

“When I heard my mom speak those fateful words I just felt my stomach drop. I mean, only nerds call it ‘The Collection’,” remembered a somber Michael.

The boys admit that they could’ve been more forgiving towards their mother but they don’t regret their jarring words or the tears that they caused. And who can blame them? This world is full of harsh realities, and it just so happened that Patsy was slapped in the face with one on that quiet June morning.
