The Evolvement of Education…

What comes to mind when you hear the word education? Education used to mean something that was obtained formally but the word is constantly evolving. You no longer have to be connected to an institution in order to be educated. Everyone is receiving an education whether they know it or not. We are being educated at the beauty salon, at the grocery store, while we are hanging out with our friends, etc. It is up to you to decide the type of education you would like to receive. I’ve heard the saying, “ignorance is bliss, but really ignorance is dangerous.” What you don’t know will hurt you. At the click of a button we have more information at our fingertips than any other generation. We can: listen to audio books, attend college courses online, Google literally anything, and the list goes on and on. Why is it that we have so much at our fingertips, but yet there are still many people who are misinformed about a lot of issues? As I was finishing my bachelors degree I always knew that my next step would be to obtain my masters degree. After graduating with my bachelors degree I took a year off from college and began my teaching journey (you can find more about that by clicking this link https://medium.com/@Eyesofaneducator/i-didnt-become-an-educator-to-help-change-lives-53acd1315c24#.9itccvzc6 ) and a year later I was enrolled in a masters program. I, like many other people assumed that obtaining a masters degree would guarantee me a better job and I would be able to climb the ladder of success in education until I retired. Yeah right. Graduating with my masters did afford me a better job with better pay, but a year into my job I realized that having a masters wasn’t the end all be all. If I wanted to continue to gain knowledge I had to find it myself and it wasn’t in obtaining another degree. Degrees boost our egos and thats about it, but in order to really evolve as a human being you have to constantly be self seeking with or without the extra letters behind your name. There is definitely a transition taken place in the world, where degrees aren’t as revered as they were 10–15 years ago. People are realizing that they are educating themselves on a daily basis, so why waste money on tuition. This is unless you are a doctor, lawyer, or in any field where reading books and asking Google will not help you, well unless you are Frank Abagnale, Jr.. :) I said all of this to say, don’t let money or anything hold you back from becoming a better you and being a well educated individual. If you aren’t able to afford college no worries, I have two websites where you can learn skills for free or pay a small fee to be exposed to many courses on an array of topics. Check out www.edx.org (free courses) as well as www.skillshare.com. How do you educate yourself? Applied knowledge is power!
