General Mills decided to phase out its artificial flavors and colors and replace them by natural extracts from fruits, vegetables, and spices. Starting from the premise that people don’t want to eat ingredients colors which names that can’t be pronounced like Yellow 5 or Blue 42, the firm determined it was time to reconnect with both parents concerns over synthetic dyes, and kids expectation to taste fruity flavors.

As predicted the move was quite well received, by parents considering that GM was acting in favor of their children’s health. The truth remains to be a smart marketing move. By muddying the water with natural-ness which will increase the consumption, people forget that eating pure-sugar meals is proven to dispose kids to obesity and other health issues. No dyes, but “it’s still marshmallows for breakfast”.
