ChatGPT on Apple Watch

In the following article you will learn how to set up an iOS Shortcut for using ChatGPT on your Apple Watch and iPhone.

It consists of 2 steps:

  1. Retreiving your API key from OpenAI
  2. Creating the ChatGPT Shortcut on iOS (also see download link below)

After following these steps, you can use ChatGPT from your iOS devices via the Shortcuts app.

ChatGPT on iPhone
  1. Retreiving your API key from OpenAI

If you are already using ChatGPT via the browser, you can simply login here and generate your secret key. When you go to “Usage” in the side-menu you can see how many API requests you have been doing already and if your free quota is used up.

Your key starts with “sk-” and you will need it in the next step when you create & configure the Shortcut on iOS:

Generate your API key for OpenAI

2. Creating the ChatGPT Shortcut on iOS

Even if you have not yet created a Shortcut on iOS before: it‘s very simple. This shortcut consists of two parts: first, chosing if you want to use speech-to-text or plain typing as an input method and second, performing the API call to OpenAI and displaying the response.

I’ve created the Shortcut using my iPad, but you can also do it on your iPhone.

First part:

Second part of the Shortcut:

That’s it — now you’re ready to use ChatGPT as conveniently as possible from your Apple Watch or iPhone.

You can also download the Shortcut via this link: https://www.icloud.com/shortcuts/a258786f662c41cfa210f599994de7b7 but don‘t forget to fill in your OpenAI API key before using it!

Some more tips:

  • You can adjust the Shortcut yourself if you don‘t want a choice of speech-to-text vs. typing when launching the Shortcut
  • Set up the Shortcut as a „double or triple tap“ on the back of the iPhone for easier accessibility. Link.
  • You can find the API docs for the „Completions“ API and more details about the request that is being used here via this link.
  • If the Shortcut doesn‘t produce results, go to the „usage“ overview in your OpenAI portal and check if you have used up your free trial quota.

Let me know down below if this helped you and if you have other suggestions how to make this Shortcut even better!

If this article helped you, I’d appreciate a little tip (see link down below). Thanks!
