Modern video surveillance systems are an excellent way to protect your property and a deterrent for perpetrators. Unfortunately, installing a network of cameras can be quite expensive, so in some cases people resort to installing fake devices.

At first glance, they are no different from the original, and this is enough to scare away a potential thief. Some scammers pass off props for real cameras and sell them as used ones. In order not to become their victim, you should get acquainted with the features of fake cameras.

Five signs of a fake video camera

Lightweight plastic. Build quality for a prop is not as important, so manufacturers often do not pay enough attention to it. In addition, you can easily recognize a fake camera by its weight — it is usually too light for its size due to the lack of electronic parts.

Suspicious cables. The absence of wires should also alert a buyer. High-quality video cameras have at the very least a robust power supply cable.

Fake logo or lack thereof. Before buying, be sure to find out the brand of the device. Most well-known manufacturers care about the recognition of their product, so an incorrect logo or its absence clearly indicates a fake device.

Weirdness in functioning. A fake outdoor video surveillance camera has limited functionality and you can often notice certain oddities. For example, excessive movement tracking — such camera moves almost constantly when someone passes by.

Red LEDs. No major manufacturer of modern equipment will make a camera visible by installing bright red lights. These solutions are found only in props or in outdated versions of video surveillance systems for private residences.

If you have a very limited video surveillance budget, use our Faceter service. It can even turn a regular smartphone into a security camera. Faceter is the best alternative to a fake or a prop camera.
