Falcon Coffees is a green coffee importer with a mission to change the way that coffee is traded, for good. With a social impact agenda at its core, Falcon pursue transparency in all of their supply chains to ensure that everyone involved benefits from their work. We sat down with one of their sales representatives Bara Ernygrova to find out more.

The actual job of a green coffee importer is to facilitate the relationship between coffee producers and coffee roasters. Yet it’s also much more than that.
Before I start, I’d like to say that I can only speak for…

This year’s theme for International Women’s Day is #BalanceforBetter. It is a call to action to drive gender equity across the world. We need a balance of masculine and feminine in the world for it to function well. In order to achieve a greater equilibrium, we need to celebrate the achievements of women, alongside men, and continue to raise awareness of gender biases.

The coffee industry remains male dominated, especially in origin countries, but there is a greater drive towards equality across the entire industry, and a larger number of inspiring female roasters and baristas are taking the spotlight than…
In 2018, Falcon provided $10,000 in funding to World Coffee Research, the collaborative, global, research nonprofit that conducts advanced agricultural Research & Development for coffee. This investment was part of an annual commitment that includes administering WCR’s “Checkoff Program,” which allows roasters and coffee traders of all sizes to contribute to this industry-wide, collaborative effort.

These contributions have helped advance three key research and development programs that are transforming the coffee sector. The programs aim to boost productivity across the industry, be profitable for coffee farmers and ensure coffee production is environmentally sustainable.
Breeding climate smart coffee varieties.

Peru is home to an estimated 220,000 smallholder coffee farmers and is the largest producer of certified organic coffees in the world. Each farmer averages about two hectares of coffee, with an average yield of 14 quintales (46kg) per hectare. Exportable production for the 2018 crop, now underway, is projected at 4.2 million (60kg) bags.
It is estimated that 25% of coffee farmers belong to a cooperative or farmer organisation, while 75% farm independently.
Production is on the rise after the crop was severely impacted by an outbreak of Leaf Rust, (a fungal disease that causes defoliation of the trees…

Introduction
Think about the cup of coffee that you drank this morning. Where did the coffee come from? Which farmer grew those coffee beans and how do you know if the farmer was paid a living wage? With a commodity that is processed up to 7 times during its journey, how do you trace one smallholder farmer’s output from 5 hectares of coffee trees to the coffee cup?
There are big challenges in verifying the amount paid for coffee and if every farmer in a cooperative complies with the same ethical and environmental practices. This question is at the heart…
About 6 years ago, I was in the Central Valley of Costa Rica on a coffee mission, searching for stand-out micro-lots.
I remember the day my hosts took me to visit far-flung mountain farms where the focus had been the production of top quality coffee. The cherries were in full ripeness and the trees appeared to be in great health. I was struck by the enthusiasm of the farmers who seemed highly motivated to produce top quality micro-lots. Many were working with local micro-mills which were built exclusively for processing micro-lots of washed, honeyed and natural coffees. I remember feeling…

We have been working on sourcing and importing specialty coffee from Honduras for several years, but in the last twelve months, we’ve also implemented a grass roots project. This project has been aimed at raising quality and increasing access to market for small producers in the Copan region of western Honduras, near the border with Guatemala. This project is the first of many quality development projects we have lined up for Falcon Specialty, with a focus on giving small producers access to specialty buyers and increasing their resilience to fluctuations and volatility in the coffee market. …
In the production of coffee, women can face many injustices. These can include receiving less income for their coffee, reduced access to inputs — such as fertiliser or credit — less leadership opportunities at cooperative level, less ownership opportunities to own land and livestock and general restrictions to accessing basic coffee market information. Breaking down these ingrained social biases can be very difficult, but over the last few years there has been a growing momentum in bringing attention to the gender imbalance through “Women’s Coffee.”
The first pilot of Women’s Coffee was undertaken in Nicaragua in 2001, when coffee from…
