IFL Week Six Review

Week six is in the books and it was another weekend of hard-fought action in arenas across the Indoor Football League.

We’ll start first with the team profiled earlier this week, the Spokane Empire. Coming off ludicrous back-to-back bye weeks, there was no doubt the Empire would be well-rested and aptly-prepared for its home matchup against the Iowa Barnstormers.

It showed on the field. Spokane was in control for almost the entire game and beat Iowa 54–51. Only a late rally from the Barnstormers made the score more respectable.

So far this season, Spokane has been riding the superb play from their quarterback Charles Dowdell. And he did have a good game, completing 19 of 25 passes for 104 yards and a couple touchdowns.

But, the true offensive star was running back was Trevor Kennedy. He carried the ball 13 times for 127 yards and four touchdowns. He was simply unstoppable.

This demonstrates a stark difference between indoor football and arena football. In the arena game, running backs are glorified offensive lineman and most teams throw the ball on every down. In the indoor leagues, running backs are actually utilized as key parts of an offense.

Project FANchise owners might want to keep that in mind when they approach roster building, as a game-changer at running back can make an indoor offense incredibly dynamic.

The win moves Spokane to 3–1 and drops Iowa to 3–2.

A handful of hours west in the state of Washington was another IFL matchup between the Tri-Cities Fever and the Colorado Crush.
