I spent one summer perfecting (to me) how to tweak a cheapo can of baked beans into a quick side dish. It works really well, so I often do that. I wanted a shortcut to making them from scratch. I add an acid (vinegar/lemon juice, rum) and onions/veg., brown sugar as needed, and garlic, Worcestershire sauce, and a few other things.
I then found Bush’s limited edition flavor called “Sweet Heat” and loved them straight out of the can, but of course they do cost more. I find them at Big Lots for about $1.20, which is still high for me but a treat. If you still find them on the shelf somewhere, try them!
