In 1930 or so the owners sold mineral rights to 100+ acres for $5. It seemed like magic money, I am sure.

They can’t mine under here, because it is too costly, broke too many expensive drill parts. Coal is worth nothing now anyway. The gas well came and there was nothing much we could do as surface owners. I resented it. We got free gas. I learned the care and feeding of the well and made peace with it. No-one shoots into it. ;)

We are allowed an obscene allowance of gas, but there is no meter, so they don’t seem to care. Ownership changes hands fairly often. We do have natural gas appliances and heaters and even a hot tub. We are making the most of it.
