“S/he couldn’t help but…” but what? Laugh? Smile? Feel joyous glee at that douche taking a fall and breaking his nose? How about you just go on and say “S/he laughed as the jerk who pushed her stumbled and fell flat on the pavement.” Those extra words are useless and annoying.
