My first posting was one year at Crown Commercial Service (CCS) in Liverpool, a department I’d never heard of before joining the scheme but soon found out are responsible for buying common goods and services across government. I wasn’t sure what to expect when I first joined the scheme but I couldn’t have asked for a better first year.

After graduating from university, I spent a couple of years travelling and working part-time jobs whilst trying to figure out what career path to take. I had no idea about what procurement entailed so I knew I had a lot to learn. I worked within the Sourcing Operations team and was able to work on a breadth of procurements. The role gave me invaluable experience, teaching me all about the role of commercial but also skills, such as leadership and relationship management. I worked within a fantastic team and everyone was so friendly and supportive, particularly whilst I was studying for a commercial qualification.

My current placement is a year at the Ministry of Defence at Portsmouth. Despite having a years’ worth of commercial experience, I still didn’t know what to expect. I’m currently managing contracts for the Navy and I’m hoping to begin to develop the strategy for a future procurement. It presents many challenges but I’m able to apply what I learnt from my first placement to the role to develop my commercial understanding.

I’d definitely recommend applying for the Fast Stream- it’s been a great experience and I’ve had the opportunity to meet, and work with, lots of amazing people.
