Tiffany, Thank You for addressing something that we all have done at one time or the other and we all have been recipients of. The tips are well meaning and I give You much respect for that but these seem to be taken from a scientific journal. Scientific journals with a Western foucus have not often taken culture and traditions into consideration when making blanket statements. (By the way I Am a Western gal born and bred)
For example number 1. What about cultures — some East Indians for example speak with a lot of head movements? These head movements may seem stange and awkward to Westerners but they are just the part of full-body communication style that so many cultures engage in, for example Italians who speak a lot with their hands.
Then there is the point about covering their bodies example their mouths. That is also quite common. A relic from the days when it was considered feminine to cover one’s mouth sort of coyly. Many women from Asian countries do this.
In the Caribbean, America and across the diaspora where slaves of African origin were beaten for the insolence of looking the slave master in the eyes , the descendants have not thrown that mantle off easily. People are still shy about eye-to-eye contact.
So while I totally get where You are coming from and respect your efforts this article repeats Western biases and does not really give tangible evidence.
I mean some people are such good liars that they beat polygraph tests. They can control autonomic reactions because deep inside they do not have any guilt or think that they are doing anything wrong at all.
Again, generally speaking I like your posts and I commend You for the effort for addressing important topics.
