All up in my business…

Day 293 — In business the client is always right. That axiom aside, it is a challenge to meet their needs when expectations are unchecked.

There are clients who, through some cosmic confluence of circumstance, become weaponized and toxic. Then there are clients who graciously welcome you into the fold. And those that challenge you to your core. I tend to like them all for very different reasons. At the end of the day, I am in awe of businesses, industries, and the people who step forward and move them forward. Persistence and progress, in my humble opinion, are highly undervalued.

The few clients that slip through my embrace — I get it. Sometimes it is just business. Sometimes it is me, or someone else on our team who doesn’t click or mismanages. Everyone is human. But admittedly, I am not everyone’s cup of tea. WAIT! Q-TIP! Quit taking it personally. I’m finally figuring it out. Thanks to coach, Bill Cortright.

There simply is nothing better than to find people who are intellectually curious, committed, and do interesting things, in new and innovative ways. My greatest friendships are forged from that same magic mix.

Only upon reflection am I able understand why certain friendships fell away. Mourning the loss of them, questioning why they stopped connecting or fell silent took up a lot of emotional energy until I came to terms with the fact that people come into my life for a reason, a season, or a lesson.

Many who are blessings often have come into my life as clients, allied professionals, and…yes…even competitors.

Over the years our business has evolved and continues to do so. I see it as a metaphor for my life. Where we start and end up — can be vastly different. I started this life transformation after catching myself asking, “How did I get here? HOW did I get here?!” I’m forgiving myself and finding a positive pathway forward.

I caution clients who insist they know exactly who and where their constituencies are. In online advertising, the reality can be vastly different. And the metrics don’t lie. Just like being overweight. The reality is right there. For all to see.

I am currently working on myself in ways that make me question everything. I falter and fail. I get up and keep trying. It can be daunting and tiring, but it is so worth it. Like clients who become the most unlikely of friends. The rascally ones? Well, we seem to gravitate towards each other. Makes me work harder. But I’m used to that.
