In honor of her memory…
Day 223 — This is video of my beloved sister Mary Eleanor when she finds out that she is having a granddaughter. Her grandson finds out he’s having a sister. It is heartbreakingly hilarious. I lost her to breast cancer this time one year ago. I can barely believe it. I’ve been aware this anniversary was coming and trying to manage it in the background of everything else going on.
She never lived to hold her granddaughter. I proudly stood in her stead as Harper came into this world. Barely able to contain my tears of joy and profound sadness. Harper began to walk a few days ago. Life moves inexorably forward.
People ask me what finally happened that made me pull the trigger on my weight loss and life transformation. While there are many things that seemed to collide all at once, it is her loss that cut the deepest. The widest. I vowed to get healthier, live better, and give myself a fighting chance to behold my grandchildren when they come into this world.
I see the wake of grief and loss when someone we not only love, but need, is ripped from our embrace too soon. She had much to live for. We had much to give her. We miss her wisdom and wit. Her granddaughter has the same squinty, sparkly-eyed smile. I have full faith that the loud whisper I heard telling me to begin this Fat To Fab Over 50 transformation was her voice…clear as day.
So today, I recommit myself to live life in a way that is worthy of her memory. My weight loss is at a stall. I remember her. And carry on.
