Did Uber pay you to write this?
I see this is the only thing you’ve published on Medium, so it’s odd you would immediately be accepted on a curated publication.
I pretty much agree with everything you said regarding the benefits of being your own scheduler. What I disagree with is whether or not it’s a good deal for the individual drivers. Where I drive, unless I’m participating in a promotion or unless there’s surge, I make maybe 9$ an hour after expenses. That doesn’t include the car note or insurance, mind you. Just gas and vehicle maintenance. As such, I only drive under promotions. That doesn’t keep Uber for engaging in shenanigans where they try to short me for what I’m owed, though, such as this past weekend where they shorted me over 50$. Then there’s the weird messages to keep my driving. You’re keeping the city safe! Good job! Wait, you’ve almost driven 15 rides, don’t you want to continue? You’re almost at three hours! What kind of adult will be motivated by such crap? What kind of company thinks so poorly of its partners that they try to use that as motivation?
It also doesn’t excuse the regularly horrible and tone deaf crap that comes out of Uber HQ. Drivers are treated like an expense. Not an expense you just deal with, like gasoline, but more like we’re vermin and will eventually need to be exterminated. And that’s what they are doing.
And I’m not even going to touch the TERRIBLE customer service. Something that drivers have to interact with regularly. It’s bad.
My issue with Uber is that it could be really, really good for everyone involved. There are no structural or inherent reasons why the drivers need to be treated like vermin. Uber chooses to do this.
