Fake WorldCoin Accounts Are Sparking a Fraud Storm on X/Twitter

On July 24, 2023, WorldCoin officially launched. The platform is set to distribute digital currency for free to the global population of 8 billion, realizing a fair distribution of wealth. WorldCoin was proposed in 2019 by Sam Altman, one of the founders of OpenAI, and was inspired by the theory of Universal Basic Income (UBI). The precursor to UBI can be traced back to Thomas More, the author of “Utopia” during the Middle Ages. As a humanist and social philosopher, he believed that rational principles of equality, industriousness, and the pursuit of education are fundamental characteristics of democracy.

WorldCoin has attracted much attention, leading to the emergence of many fake WorldCoin accounts on X (formerly known as Twitter). Despite the real WorldCoin account already having the gold checkmark, symbolizing it’s a business verified by X, many fake accounts have exploited X Blue, creating fraudulent WorldCoin accounts for US$8 US per month. Moreover, X continues to grant these fake accounts blue checkmarks even after review.

Some of these accounts have even created fraudulent websites and constantly tag X’s users to follow their fake accounts, causing considerable inconvenience to X’s users.

I hope that X Safety and the X Blue team can put a stop to this immediately, otherwise this will create a storm of scams on X.
