CAGED NIGHTINGALE

I was a Nightingale
chirruping in a cage
once steady and hale
turned to a jade,
fed and tamed
But I could never be yours for the taking
though you had me named,
you were highly mistaken
I’ve drunk silence long enough
I’ve now uncovered my strength
and broken the leg cuff
Now I’ll be living a life wellspent
You can have your cage to yourself
I’ll no longer hang on your golden frame
or on top of the shelf
I’ll bathe the sun and be done with the shame
