I wish it was this simple but you can not put the flexbox fallback in a “@supports not” feature…

You’re absolutely right — the solution we presented is a simplification of what is actually under the hood. In our CSS, we actually define the Flex grid first, then use @supports below it in the same declaration, overriding the aforementioned flex rules.
