Seven Dream Cat Homes

Last week we gave our top tips on turning your home into a cat-friendly haven. While cats only need a few basic, though fundamental, changes to keep them feeling the feline feng-shui, some owners have taken cat-friendly home design to a whole new level.

Take a look at some of the world’s most extravagant, luxurious and sometimes slightly bizarre houses created for cats.

Asahi Kasei’s Plus-Nyan House — Japan

The Japanese are not only one of the most cat-loving countries in the world, they’re also masters of innovative interior design. So it’s not surprising that this stunning house provides comfort and style to both humans and cats.

Featuring a bathroom with its private litter tray area, climbing steps, ceiling-high cat walkways and special spots to hide away when they need a break from their humans, this house is a cat’s ultimate dream home.

The $35,000 Playground — California

One very generous owner is spoiling his 18 cats rotten with this brightly-coloured house cum jungle gym in sunny California.

Their owner invested some serious dollar for his pets’ pleasure: every room has been transformed with the cat in mind, resulting with the end result including a house packed with walkways, a cat-only helter skelter, gigantic cat scratching posts and fun, if garish, shelving.

You can watch a video tour of the California cat haven here:

The Hipster Riverside Condo — Milwaukee

When building his trendy condo, architect Keith Stachowiak Jr. had 10 year old tabby Fanvry’s needs at the top of the list. The most notable feature in his quirky home is its “cat superhighway”.

Winding around the 21 feet high ceiling, the series of 130 year old reclaimed beams are a favourite spot for Fanvry to both play and nap. And to think, most cats only know the dizzying heights of the top of the fridge…

The Cat House — San Diego

Remodelled specifically for their cats, Bob Walker and Frances Mooney’s San Diego home was as cat-friendly as it was bold and beautiful.

The rainbow coloured interior had built-in doors, stairs and hideouts all designed perfectly for felines.

Extra cat pleasing features included a bird-decorated cat swing and ground to ceiling high scratching post leading to high ledges circling the room’s ceilings.

Sadly, when Bob and Frances moved house the new tenants renovated all their hard work. However the duo made all their private interior shots public to raise awareness about cat- considerate homes and are still big champions of the cause.

The Mad Scientist Office — San Francisco

When Oakland-based architecture design firm Because We Can were tasked with turning a sparse room into a creative office space, one very special design detail stole the show.

The room’s ‘cat tube’ acts as a bespoke feline transport system, travelling over the desks and allowing cats to peak through portholes to look over their science-themed kingdom.

Wall to Wall Cat Walkways — Taipei, Taiwan

Another perfect example of the perfect balance between modern interiors and cat-friendly design features is this Taiwanese dream home.

Cat features include wall to wall cat walkways, giant scratching posts, ramps and even ‘cat-friendly sofas’.

The Ings Luxury Cat Hotel — West Yorkshire

For those of us who don’t have the budget or willing flatmates/landlords to start building cat-pleasing interior features, you can always treat your cat to a stay at The Ings Luxury Hotel.

This boutique cat hotel delivers nothing short of five star treatment with glamorous four poster beds, flat screen TVs screening films for cats, mood-lighting and even gourmet à la carte room service.
