Here’s what Medium needs to do (I hope the people in charge read this): Add a button to every post that says “more like this,” and maybe also one that says “less like this.” Then program the bots to streamline individual readers’ feeds according to their clicks. I have already selected broad categories, as Medium currently allows, but with the huge amount of diverse writing available on Medium, broad categories are not enough to craft a meaningful feed. This author is spot-on with his criticism of Medium’s recent rend toward generic “listicles.” I don’t want to read those, yet most days half my feed is made up of them. I’m fed gruel I don’t want to eat, and left hungry for the great articles I know are on Medium hoping to be consumed by readers like me. It’s time to tweak your algorithm, Medium.

If you can’t/won’t add the suggested buttons, at least do this with your categories — In addition to letting readers choose the categories that interest them, let us select categories we want to block. I could go the rest of my life without ever reading another motivational “how to succeed in business” article. No matter how I revise my category selection, there are several on my feed every day. Give me the power to stop that.
