Comfort Zones

Have you ever thought to yourself that maybe the reason you’re not where you want to be in life is because you’re holding onto the past? Many times we tend to hold onto the things, people, and places that are familiar to us because they make us feel comfortable. A lot of the times, these things have been in our lives for an extremely long time and we can’t see life without it. However, the very thing we are holding onto is damaging us or holding us back. Everything has a time and a season. There’s no guarantee that anything will last forever. The beautiful thing is that with new experiences we learn, grow, and evolve as people. Also, we what is best for us and expand our opportunities.

I’ll give you an example. At some point in May and December of every year, more and more students are graduating. The beautiful things are that the students achieve their goal after working hard for four years the students and student receive a nice pretty piece of paper. At the time of graduation, there is excitement in the air. People are happy and full of joy. However, the second the student leaves college, they are in the real world. I was reading an article a little while ago that said about 30% of graduating college students will not be able to find a full time job and 60% of college graduates won’t find a job in their major. Which means, that a lot of college students are spending a lot of time, energy, and money on a degree in a field that they might not even enter. That’s a scary thought. Also, I read another article that said the national average student loan debt is about $25,000. When is the last time you bought something for $25,000 and didn’t use it for whatever you intended or at all?

Many career advisors suggest getting any job that will pay the bills. These same advisors say that many times people who come straight out of college tend to only look for jobs in their field and are sadly disappointed when they can’t worm in their field. Now they’re not saying that a graduate cannot find a job in their major. Instead, these advisors are saying that by focusing so much on your major or current field, you could be limiting yourself for putting money in your pocket and from new opportunities.

It’s not the worst thing in the world to try something new. Many times in trying something new, we discover new things that we like. We also discover things that we don’t like. It can seem scary at first to step out of your comfort zone, but by doing so, you open yourself up to a world of possibilities. Don’t let yourself be held back due to fear or comfort. A lot of the times, there is a great thing wait for us around the corner, but we can’t see it because we’re so focused on what is familiar to us. There is a quote that says “life begins at the end of your comfort zone.” Step outside of the box and see what’s in store for you.
