Game of Thrones: Season 1- What the Heck, Winter

Ahh…. winter. They call it “the most wonderful time of the year.” Since I was a kid winter has been my favorite time of year. People seem nicer, give more, smile a whole bunch. As I write I can hear the bells of Salvation Army workers drawing us in to give change. My sensory system reacts to mere thoughts of the sights and smells of Bath and Body Works’s holiday collection. Just yesterday Nat King Cole’s holiday station on Pandora brought me back to my happy place. With the affection I have for winter, I’d hope a show with the tagline “Winter is Coming” would be 1000x more appealing.
It is not.
Let’s start from the beginning. I never wanted to watch Game of Thrones. If we’re gonna be real about it, it’s too White. Yes, I’ve seen the guest appearances by people of color at this point (I’m on Season 2), but it just does what other fantasy shows, movies, and series have done for years now- imagines worlds where we don’t exist or exist on the frays. And at this point in life and Blackness, I don’t have time for that type of White nonsense.

So, how did we end up in the place that has tainted my beloved Winter? Peer pressure. For 7 seasons I’ve held strong. But FB is full of GoT nerds who are serious about the show and want to take you down with them. I was weakened by their appeals, but I held on to some of my dignity. The final nails in the my coffin built with wood from the kingwood near the capital came via the blerds and a childhood friend. A ‘blerd’ is a mash-up of ‘black’ and ‘nerd’. The reason they got me is because they understand my sociopolitical stances, especially when it comes to media. These blerds promised me it was still worth watching. One very intelligent, well-rounded, and well-reasoning brotha (who I won’t name but he knows EXACTLY who he is lol) appealed to my reasoning with his verbal dissertation. Then here comes Childhood Friend “A” with the “well can you really have an opinion if you don’t watch it?” I have a message for all of you:
Your friendship account has expired and you are not being asked to renew the contract.

OK, it’s not that I completely hate the show. Y’all just hyped it up like it was the best series since Alex Haley’s Roots. As a Twitter user pointed out in his thread, GoT is a soap opera. The episodes are arbitrary. The show is supposed to be about everyone trying to reclaim the Iron Throne (I suppose), but the only themes I’m getting are White on White crime, nudity, bad ass kids, and an implied epidemic of sexually transmitted illnesses. Here’s the thing- if y’all had told me this is a glorified medieval renaissance softcore porn sci-fi soap opera then I wouldn’t be yelling so much. I would have gone in expecting nothing but entertainment. The show ain’t deep, y’all. It ain’t deep at all.
Alright, so do I like anything?!
Yes. Here’s who/what I like:
(1) Khal Drogo (He fine and has a good heart below his rough exterior) (2) The White Walkers (3) The wolves (4) The dragons and their impending destruction of property (lol, haven’t gotten that far yet) (5)Lord Stark (6)Arya (7) The opening credits
What I hate:
(1) The unfounded and unnecessary hype behind the show (2) Khal Drogo’s demise (I’m still mad he died and Khaleesi is still with us acting like she owns humanity) (3) Wolves being killed and not having a lot of parts after the first few episodes (4) Lord Stark being dead and Joffrey’s ignant ass still being a thing (5) The “Mother of Dragons” is phenotypically what White people claim is the perfect human. Kinda over the whole Aryan thing. Those genes are recessive aka weak, yo. Let it go. (6) Khaleesi is like those liberal White women who wants to be the savior of the colored people, but will legit kill them if she doesn’t get her way. (7) The queen’s eyebrows (8) Essentially everyone/thing who/that isn’t a non-human
Now, I WILL give GoT credit for something. It has made itself the show I love to hate. They manage to put something in every single episode that make me have to keep watching because I wanna know what’s gonna happen next, just like my Korean dramas. Korean dramas have the same damn theme for every series, but the drama level is high enough to make me wanna see how they are going to let the predictable story play out. In GoT, it’s usually that they kill someone I don’t want to die or do want to die and I want to see the world without the person. And yes, they’ll kill anybody. Folk you thought were needed in order for the story to continue. NOPE. Just like a…guess what? Soap opera. *dun dun DUNNNNNNN*
Stay tuned for GoT Season 2: Winter is Still Loading
Keep it classy, nerds! Flashe out!
