Calling IRS over phone and then to talk to a real person it is not easy generally. If you do not know the ways to reach them, then it will pass hours but still you will not be able to figure out. Today, I tried to call the IRS for my recent Tax Return Transcript and I was completely screwed up to figure out the thing. After hours of trying, I figure out the best way to reach them.

federal irs phone number to talk to irs agent for tax returns

So, before starting calling to them, I will suggest you be patience and call only when you have at least one hour free time.

So, long story short! Just follow the following steps and hopefully you will reach one realy IRS person shortly. I am not trying to write exactly the auto audio calls. Just read this and listen the auto calls and do one by one steps:

Step 1: Before calling to IRS, make sure you have all of the information in your hand that you might be needed:

  • Get your Social Security Number cards and birth dates for those who were on the return you are calling about.
  • If you don’t have a Social Security number (SSN), an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) letter
  • Your filing status ie you filed as Single, Head of Household, Married Filing Joint or Married Filing Separate
  • Your prior-year tax return information. You may need to verify your identity before answering certain questions
  • A copy of the tax return you’re calling about
  • Any letters or notices IRS sent you

Step 2: You can reach IRS from 7 a.m. — 7 p.m. Monday thru Friday. I feel the best time to call is early in the morning. And the IRS telephone number is 1–800–829–1040.

Step 3: When you called them, the first question the automated system will ask you is to choose your language.

Step 4: You can choose your language like by pressing 1 for English. But

Step 5: Remember, once you’ve set your language, do NOT choose Option 1 (regarding refund info). Just choose option 2 for “Personal Income Tax” instead to go further.

Step 6: Next, press 1 for “form, tax history, or payment”.

Step 7: Next, press 3 “for all other questions.”

Step 8: Next, press 2 “for all other questions.”

Step 9: When the system asks you to enter your SSN or EIN to access your account information, do NOT enter anything.

Step 10: After it asks twice, you will be prompted with another menu.

Step 10: Press 2 for personal or individual tax questions.

Step 12: Finally, press 4 for all other inquiries. The system should then transfer you to an agent.

Not, you have to wait for couple of mins to half an hour. It depends on the volume of people are calling. So, please be patience.

Hopefully, if you follow the above instructions then it will be easy for you to reach a real IRS person to talk and resolve your issues.
