Pain > or = Pleasure?

Be honest with yourself for just a moment, sit back and think; how many times have you tried to avoid pain? Would you, If given the chance trade all that pain for pleasure?

If you had asked me those very questions about a week ago my answers would have been a depressing “Everytime!” and a joyous “Absolutely!” But while arranging the furniture last week (this is when I contemplate life), I began thinking about how dull our life would have been without this dreaded thing that we all call “pain”.

Let’s pretend we live in a perfect world for just a second, imagine that each and everyday from the beginning of time has had no wars, no fights between people, a clean environment, no one has ever cried but rather each day is filled with laughter, joy and people of every language, tribe, nation and continent love each other unfailingly and unconditionally. Doesn’t this sound beautiful?

Quite the contrary.

Don’t get me wrong here, I’m not advocating for war, injustice, hate or imperfection.

Imagine once again, if all that everyone in the world ever knew was joy, love, peace, perfection and happiness no one would have ever been able to logically fathom what the opposite of those feelings or states of existence were due to the fact that no one in the perfect world would have had experienced hate, unrest, imperfection and sadness to weigh it out against.

The same goes with pain/troubles in our lives; we truly are only able to appreciate our pleasures because we have our painful experiences to weigh it out against, that is, pleasure looses it value without an individual’s personal experience with pain.

Ups and downs in this mortal life is what makes us mortal humans, we aren’t perfect but we definitely strive to be.

Therefore I guess it would be safe to assume that living in a world without pain would be equivalent to living in a world without pleasure.

Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. [James 1:2–4 ESV]
