Thanks for the post. This always has me thinking. I live in Cape Town, South Africa, and the Hollywood influence is really big here through Film and TV productions around every corner. Black Sails, Dark Tower, Tomb Raider, to name a few recent ones. Through this our technical crew has become very experienced over the decades (to international standards) but the writing culture is basically non existent, which makes it hard to collaborate especially if you’re writing for the North American market. I try to go to LA once a year for a 2 weeks at a time. Setup my meetings in advance and grind out what I can while I’m there (In an Indie Producer capacity). It’s always a sobering experience to see the ‘slump-shouldered, pasty-faced writers’ just to remind you how competitive content creation is, and how important it is to keep your fingers on the pulse of trending Hollywood. I think writing for TV you can’t be too far removed from the chaos, but as a features junkie I enjoy coming back to SA where things move a tad slower.
