While talking about feminism and why we need feminism in India, let’s first be precise that feminism is not about putting men down. The term feminism is closely associated with terms like identity, women empowerment, equality etc. If we have a glance at the way Indian women and their status in the society, they never questioned their existence and never even realised there was something amiss.

However, with the growing discrimination between male and female, sexual harassment at workplace, rising crime rate against women, the answer is clear. When exists extreme oppression and male dominance in almost every industry, and women in the country have their self-respect and dignity at stake, mentally and physically, then feminism which demands equal rights to both the sexes, is the only solution.

Women are never born weak, they are purposely made that way. They are being taught and trained to be voiceless by our society. Raising strong daughters is the virtue to offset the very social and cultural conditioning and values that are meant to rob women of their strengths and potentials as individuals. Even parents have to consciously provide their powers in full. Give them equal respect and right like they would to any other child. Also, they should inculcate a habit among young boys not to differentiate between girls.

Feminism in India should not be confined to the struggle between men and women only. Their emancipation involves breaking away from the clutches of social mores. There are many social institutions and practices that act as a hindrance and needs to be crossed.

Ladies in our country don’t want to be given priority, they just want to be equal, and want equal justice and a life just like a human being deserves.
