I'm using the term "emotional therapist". I've been a mentor for over 20 years, in formal arrangements through a company that organized external mentee-mentor relationships for corporations, and semi-formal HR department organized mentor programs in medium sized companies.

Listening to my mentees struggles, asking questions and offering alternative perspectives is really a form of emotional therapy.

My mentees have trusted me their secrets they have not shared even with their spouses.

Being a mentor has been an eye opening experience for me. I've probably learned more from my mentees than what they got from our relationship. Yet, they kept joining the weekly calls and share their struggles and results of the small experiments I've suggested.
