I was taught a long time ago that 10% was a good basic tip, and 15% for good service. I realize that prices have gone up — including the prices of basic food items at your restaurant or cafe, believe me! And like you, many of us are struggling to be able to eat sometimes, much less come to your fine establishment.
Nevertheless, if service is reasonably decent, I tip 20%. That’s what I got.
I’m REALLY sorry that, for that 20%, I do actually expect that the restaurant I went to has an expectation that it’s servers DO serve! As in, answering questions about the menu, bringing the correct items to the table, refilling water, etc. That’s the basic job! That, and treating the customers as if the restaurant is glad you came, not as if you are a “burden” that the restaurant is now going to “have to” serve something to. There is nothing particularly special about this, ok?
Here’s how I WILL get on board, fully, to support you! Get out in front of that restaurant, or all restaurants in your city, with all of the servers, cooks, dishwashers, cleaning staff, and anyone else who might be stuck dividing those tips, and picket — go to the city council or the state legislature, too — and demand that you, like ANY OTHER employee, is entitled to a living wage if you have a full-time job, and that tips are for the excellent level of service that a customer should feel happy — not obligated — to gift you with.
