The Muse Chronicles: 4
365 Writing Challenge, Day 46
I saved the glasses until I knew I would be around a crowd of people as the Muse suggested. My train ride the next day seemed to be a perfect time to try out this gift. I put the glasses on at the station. They were horn-rimmed, square-shaped and otherwise nondescript. The lenses had no prescription, so I could easily see out of them.
At first, I didn’t think they worked—I expected some kind of magical glow. But then, small details of the station began to catch my eye.
To my left, a man and woman sat across from one another, cross-legged on the bench. They shared half a bagel and laughed between bites. I could see the entirety of their relationship flow with the energy between them—their initial meeting and courting. Then, I saw the glimmer of a diamond on her right hand and then I saw their engagement scene.
A businessman in a tailored suit hurried past me and I could read the worries permeating his thoughts.
A little girl broke free from her parents and began to run between the poles of the directory signs. Time slowed and her pink skirts began to blur. Her father ran after her and scooped up her small body. I could feel the wonderment radiating from her.
Finally, I floated above myself and saw me sitting on a bench alone with my arms crossed, surrounded by a fortress of luggage. The muse had been right—I was the one blocking myself.
