What Are the Most Fuel Efficient Cars?

That sleek, sporty car of your dreams may roar, rumble and growl to your heart’s delight. It may elicit so many “oohs” and “aahs” and “wows” during a drive around the neighborhood. It may even whip through the atmosphere like no star fleet commander could ever imagine. But all that infatuation and adoration may go flying out the window as you stop to fill up your tank at the gas station.

Fast and snappy cars do have their fans. But we at Flash Motor Company understand that there’s something to be said for that stylish fuel-efficient model that registers numbers of miles per gallon that stretch past the stratosphere.

So, what are the most fuel efficient cars on the market (and that are relatively pocketbook friendly) and what can you do to stretch your gasoline dollars a little further? We at Flash Motor Company, one of the top sellers of used vehicles in Georgia to people with challenged credit, present the top 10, according to Kelley Blue Book:

  1. The 2014 Ford Fiesta gets 43 mpg on the highway. But with a manual transmission, the number rises to 45.
  2. The Scion iQ — which costs less than $17,000 — gets a combined 37 mph.
  3. A hybrid, Honda’s CR-Z has a sporty look and gets 39 mpg on the highway — with a manual transmission.
  4. The Mitsubishi Mirage has impressive credentials for the economy minded: It costs less than $14,000 and gets a combined 40 mpg.
  5. The Honda Insight — even one that’s loaded with navigation and other techie stuff — gets 44 mpg on the highway. It’s also one of the least expensive hybrids.
  6. Ford’s C-Max carries five passengers and still gets a combined 43 mpg.
  7. Only Toyota’s Prius beats Honda’s Civic Hybrid. This fancy techie boasts 47 mpg on the highway.
  8. The Prius gets just 1 mpg more than the Civic. But even with its fine package of standard equipment, it’s still priced under $25,000.
  9. The Prius C, however, gets 53 mpg on the highway with a price tag starting under $20,000.
  10. The Smart Fortwo Electric Drive puts all of them to shame; factoring in the federal tax credit, this all-electric gets a comparable usage rate of 122 mpg in the city and still costs less than $25,000. (The mpg rate is determined by the comparable cost of the electric charge.)

How Do You Improve Gas Mileage in Your Car?

How do you improve gas mileage in your car? The U.S. Department of Energy provides several tips:

  • Drive more efficiently. Aggressive driving on the highway can lower your mpg by 33 percent and in town by 5 percent.
  • Keep your car automotively fit. A good tune-up can improve your gas mileage by 4 percent.
  • Planning or combining your trips or trying to avoid rush hours to and from work can save bundles of gas money.
  • Of course, buying a more fuel-efficient vehicle may be the best route. Fueleconomy.gov lists fuel-use estimates for vehicles dating to 1984. Gaining just 10 mpg can save you well over $500 per year. In five years, that can reach $3,000.
