Parking meters installed last year to provide credit-card convenience for drivers — and more money for the city — there is one big flaw. Some of the meters resets to zero when a heavy truck passes

I know… we feel like this

The thing about old technology: it is not without its flaws. Don’t get us wrong, we know everything can be hacked but parking meters are not smart! Why are we still using them when we can take advantage of new technology and use our phones?

We can easily connect our phone number, credit card, license plate and a specific location so we never have to worry about running out of time, being towed away or getting a ticket (and even with malfunction meters!). We can map the city to the point of identifying each space available.

Now, let’s go a little deeper in what is happening here:

Many people just pay the $40 and don’t question the fine. After all, the city requires you to write a note and explain your plight. Some drivers decide the battle isn’t worth it.

This is when it becomes really interesting. So, the cities makes it so difficult to file a complain about the ticket and get your money back that most people tend to just pay for it. Why? Well, in part is to avoid the frustration because of the bureaucracy and that sometimes the amount is not worth the time and hassle.

Don’t forget: Parking is big business in a city that needs the money. City reports show that parking revenues have increased by 44 percent over the last decade.

At Fleck Parking, we are trying to build a solution so people won’t have to experience anger or frustration by getting a ticket or their car towed away. We believe there is a better way. What if you could park at someone’s driveway or garage and pay that person for the convenience. The piece of mind knowing your car won’t get ticketed or towed and the convenience of paying using your phone or any other device. What if the homeowners rents out their driveway and use the extra income to help cover some of their ever increasing rent or other living expenses?

Let’s share and get paid for it. As a community,

San Jose can work together to find a peaceful solution that doesn’t involve bureaucracy or traffic officers.
