Former Western Kentucky shotput thrower Jessica Ramsey has qualified for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics shot put finals after finishing in the Top 12 in qualifications Friday morning.

Ramsey, who set the USA shotput record during the Olympic Trials earlier this year, finished sixth overall, throwing 18.75.

American Raven Saunders won the qualifying round, throwing 19.22.

The shotput final is set for 7:35 p.m. Saturday night, Bowling Green time.


Ashland, Kentucky's Colin Porter has garnered an offer from Western Kentucky, Porter tweeted this weekend.

Porter is set a 2023 recruiting target.

Standing 5'10", 160 pounds, the Paul G. Blazer point guard had an impressive summer at the Kentucky-West Virginia Shootout, totaling 29 and 19 points in two games (both Kentucky wins). That performance earned him an offer from Marshall.

Porter, who does not yet have a ranking with a major recruiting service, also garners offers from Akron, Liberty, Lipscomb, Morehead State Western Carolina and Radford.

Former Western Kentucky outfielder Larissa Franklin and the Canadians have won their first ever Olympic softball medal after defeating Mexico, 3–2, in the bronze medal game.

Mexico finished fourth in its first ever Olympic softball appearance.

Canada struck for a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning on a two-run single from Emma Entzminger to give the Canucks a 2–0 lead.

Former Bowling Green High School standout and Navy Midshipmen running back Jamale Carouthers is headed home and will join the Hilltoppers.

Carouthers, who was named Kentucky Mr. Football by the Associated Press in 2016, has rushed for 1,092 yards and 16 touchdowns on 208 carries over his two-year Navy career. He’s also added 208 receiving yards on four catches and three touchdowns.

As a junior in 2020, the former Purple totaled 358 yards on 97 rushes and two touchdowns over 10 games.

Colby Community College small forward Tyrone Marshall has committed to Western Kentucky, marking the first commitment of the 2022 class for Rick Stansbury and the Hilltoppers.

Marshall will join the Hilltoppers for the 2022/23 campaign.

The 6'7", 215 pound Nashville native didn’t waste time picking the Tops, garnering an offer just last week.

The former two-star prospect averaged 14.1 points and 7.4 rebounds last season, shooting 55.3% from the floor (and 33.3%) from deep.

Larissa Franklin went 2-for-4 from the plate and scored once as Team Canada shutout Team Mexico, 4–0, on the first day of Olympic softball competition.

Franklin singled in the bottom of the first inning on a bunt single as the second hitter of the game for Canada and came in to score on a Jennifer Salling RBI single for the second run of the game for the Canucks, giving them a 2–0 lead after one.

She also reached on a fielder’s choice in the second and singled to lead off the bottom of the sixth.

Canada moves to 1–0 in the Olympic tournament and will face the U.S.A. Wednesday night (Thursday morning in Tokyo). The US blanked Italy, 2–0, to open competition.

First pitch Wednesday is set for 7 p.m. CT on NBCSN.


Jeremy Evans and AJ Slaughter each scored five points as the Eberlein Drive fell to Florida TNT, 74–67, in the Wichita Region final, eliminating the Drive from The Basketball Tournament.

Slaughter had an off-night from the floor, going just 2-for-9, adding a rebound and an assist to his stat line. All five of Slaughter’s points came in the second half.

Evans also logged five rebounds, all but two came in the first quarter. He also didn’t score outside of the opening frame.

Former Hilltopper outfielder Larissa Franklin and the Canadian National Softball Team open their 2020 Olympic Tournament tonight* against Team Mexico.

*First pitch is set for 15:00 JST or 1 a.m. CT

Softball is making its return to the games for the first time since the 2008 Beijing Summer Games, where Team Canada placed a best-ever fourth place, going 3–4 in the round-robin schedule before falling in the semifinals to eventual bronze medalists Australia, 5–3.

Tonight’s game will mark Mexico’s Olympic softball debut, the only debut nation in this year’s Games.

While this year marks Franklin’s Olympic debut, it is not…


Western Kentucky garnered one first-place vote and finished third in the Conference USA Preseason Media Poll, released by the conference Monday.

Marshall, who will be in their first year under new head coach Charles Huff, was picked to repeat winning East, garnering 17 first place votes, the most of any one in the conference. Willie Taggart’s FAU Owls was picked to finish second, logging six first-place votes.

Charlotte, MTSU, FIU and Old Dominion round out the predicted order of finish for the C-USA East.

In the West, UAB was picked to finish first, where they finished last season, with UTSA coming in second.

La Tech, Southern Miss, Rice, North Texas and UTEP finish the West’s predicted finish.

A.J. Slaughter scored 16 points and Jeremy Evans added 11 as the Eberlein Drive defeated the NG Saints, 86 — 68, in the first round of The Basketball Tournament Saturday evening.

The Drive are competing this year in the Wichita Region.

Slaughter wasn’t just effective on the scoreboard, finishing the game with nine rebounds (all on the defensive glass) and five assists.

Evans added nine boards and three blocks.

Leading the way for the Drive was Marquis Teague, who finished with 18 points.

The Drive will play again Sunday at 8 p.m. CT, against the Stillwater Stars, a team consisting of all Oklahoma State alumni. The game can be seen on ESPN3.
