Meet Kyle Mills, this week’s Flo Recruit Spotlight Summer Intern. Kyle is an MBA student at Stanford University and spent his summer in Palo Alto working at Apex.AI, a company that provides safe and certified software for autonomous mobility.
What made you want to join the company you interned at?
I pursued Apex.AI because of the company’s deep roots in the automotive industry and ambition of becoming an integral part of the autonomous vehicle ecosystem. Jan Becker, one of the Apex.AI founders, was a member of the Stanford team in the DARPA Urban Challenge where many of the autonomous vehicle companies today have their roots. I found his experience and that of the rest of team highly attractive — who wouldn’t want the chance to learn from legends?
After joining the company, I was quickly involved in making important strategic decisions. This spoke not only to the team’s willingness to let me hone the skills learned during my MBA, but also their treatment of me as more than just a summer intern — as a real member of the team.
What do you enjoy most about the city you work in?
Palo Alto is buzzing with opportunity. Walk down any street and you will find someone chasing a crazy dream. Truly, you begin to think that anything is possible with the right passion, people, and timing.
What was your most important takeaway or lesson from your internship?
Hiring is really hard. Although Apex.AI has a stellar team today, filling the roles needed for the future is a major challenge. While before my internship I expected hiring to be as simple as securing funding for a role, attending a few career fairs, and leveraging LinkedIn, I have since learned that hiring people who can be an immediate net benefit for the team is a different ball game.
Describe your dream job and how your internship helped you get one step closer to it.
My dream job is to work side-by-side with highly intelligent, passionate people on technical problems that could change the world. My internship at Apex.AI fitted this dream well. Not only am I working on a difficult, high-impact problem (autonomous vehicles), I am doing so alongside an awesome group of people.
Do you have any words of advice for the next intern in this role?
Never hesitate. Beyond all the things I mentioned above, Apex.AI is a place where everyone is expected and able to contribute. As a young start-up, there is no time to wait for tasks to be assigned to you or for someone to provide a detailed briefing. Instead, you must be willing to jump in and figure things out on your own. In fact, you will be respected and trusted even more once you do.
