Imagine this: You, in your stylish bathing suit🩱, lay out your beach mat like a sun-basking lizard 🦎. Eyes closed, you soak in the sounds of playful kids, the couples planning their weekend, and crashing waves🌊. Slowly, you open your eyes, hoping to capture this blissful scene in your mind’s camera — a memory to cherish forever! 🏖️🌞📸

“Whoa, hold on! Is that a sneaky little worm-ish creature🐛, or is it? Worms in your vision? Secret infestation alert⚠️? I had the same wild thoughts racing through my mind. And you know what? The answers to these puzzling questions are way more thrilling than you’d expect!✨

Who are these wiggly creatures?🐛

Although these worms seem too real and wiggly to not be true, the truth is, they are not! Your eyes have two kinds of fluids, the aqueous and vitreous humour and no and there’s nothing funny about them. They are in fact very essential for the proper functioning of your eye👁️. Believe it or not, without them, your eyes wouldn’t be those awesome round balls they are today! So these wiggly worms called eye floaters (for obvious reasons) are just clumps of vitreous humour suspended in the space. They stick together and cast a shadow on your retina. Now, these floaters can either be partially or fully detached from their original spots, exploring the vast expanse of your vision! 😎✨

If you look closely, you’ll find that these wormies are infact made of tiny circles🔘 stacked up together that have central dots in them. This corresponds to the polarity exhibitted by them. But let’s not go too much into that ‘cuz I bet you, polarity, is a topic that has never interested me. In fact, these dots look something like this:

They Can Get Bigger and Scarier!👹

So, I’m guessing now that you’ve read so far, you’ve already tried to find these wormies in your vision; and these wormies have now appeared in vision out of nowhere all because you focussed on them now!💀

Well, this not your brain playing tricks on you. It is just how they work, they light up the more you concentrate on them.😱 You may even try to find them in your vision through your eyelashes or a pinhole and they’ll look brighter.🔅 So when you concentrate or focus on them, you are focusing the energy contained in each of these spheres into a smaller space; and what happens when you put too much stuff in one place? It inflates. Similarly, when all the energy is focussed into the tiny small spaces of theses circles, they light up and seem brighter.

They Can Travel✈️ Around In Your Vision!

You must be wondering how they move around in such a jelly-life viscous fluid. They do because the vitreous liquifies over time and these wormies now have the freedom to explore and say “Hi”👋 to you in your vision!

Did you know these wormies may be as old as you? These wormies and those tiny spheres remain the same for years. Your next task: become friends🫂 with these cuties because you know you’re going to have to live with them so why not make them you acquaintances?🤝

Next, you must be wondering why these wormies seem to sink. The answer to that is quite complicated. If you think it is gravity pulling them down, then you have thought about it deep enough.

If u are a science geek, you would know that any image that is cast on the retina is inverted and it’s your brain that rotates it to how it looks in real life. Here’s an example:

This inverted man will be turned into an erect man only by your brain🧠. So if we work our way back from the brain, for you to see the wormies sinking, they should in fact be rising in the vitreous fluid; against gravity!😱 This is indeed fascinating becuase this means that there is some force inside your eye that is powerful enough to oppose gravity and lift them up!

Should You Be Worried?😟

These floaters are usually characteristic of ageing and near-sightedness. Scientists have now found a correlation between the ability to see concentrated floaters and their frequency and psychological conditions. But I’m not google to scare you with medical jargon-conditions just because you see your wormy acquaintances every now and then. I see them, you do and so does the person sitting next to you. But if you are indeed worried about them, you should consult a doctor!🩺
