Undocumented aliens were, under Obama, regular, law-abiding people with a concern of their legal status as their only red flag. Sadly, under the executive order by Trump, otherwise law-abiding aliens are now in fact, Criminals. Their only crime? Not being born here. It is an awkward place for many people who can well be described as children of “…your tired, your poor, your huddled masses, yearning to breathe free. The wretched refuse of your teeming shore”. Now USA officials no longer respect the spirit of our Statue of Liberty: “Send these, the homeless, tempest tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door.”
What happened to us in the 16 years after 9/11? How did our nation come to a state to criminalize refugees and seekers of freedom from Latin America who came as infants and children in the 80s and 90s? Now, we target more and with less compassion, those refugees and seekers of freedom from oppression and poverty in homelands from at least Seven Nations who seek freedom and a better life within the bounds of our shores?
